Asbestos was used in many products throuthout the car and building industries going back over the last 80 years as it had heat shielding properties and was a cheap and durable material; asbestos is still used in some countries around the world today. Asbestos has not been used in domestic building materials since the 1980s but it was not until 31 December, 2003 that asbestos and all products containing asbestos were banned throughout Australia.

It is illegal to import, store, supply, sell, install, use or re-use these materials. The ban does not apply to asbestos installed prior to 2003 here in Australia. Between 1945 and 1980 in Australia, asbestos was widely used in the construction industry, as well as in shipyards, power stations, boiler makers and plumbing. It was a staple of home building too – used in fibro cement, insulation, fireproofing, pipes, paint, floor coverings, ceiling tiles, and roofing materials.

Asbestos fibres are so tiny they can be inhaled deeply into the lungs where they become embedded and cause a range of lung diseases, that are slow to develop but in many cases deadly. Inhaling the fibres can cause a fibrous stiffening and shrinking of the lung, as well as lung cancer, particularly the incurable, rapidly-growing lung cancer known as mesothelioma.

Our service includes both domestic and commercial asbestos removal, from a fence, small garden shed to large scale industrial and commercial buildings. We offer a comprehensive asbestos service, from identification of asbestos containing materials through bulk sampling or asbestos surveys, through to the removal and disposal of asbestos.

Because of the potential dangers posed by asbestos containing material, we would always urge the utmost caution where any risk of exposure is possible. If you are unsure of a product or materials around your home, office or factory please contact us and we will survey any potential risks and advise the best course of action.

Before appointing an asbestos removal contractor here are some points to remember:

  • Insist on seeing copies of licenses and insurance policies before work starts
  • The cheapest price may not always be the best when it comes to your health and safety
  • Insist on final inspection of the asbestos removal areas by an independent competent person
